Every camp will sell you extras. Some are the best hour of the trip and some are a way to fill an afternoon. Here is our honest view.
A balloon at dawn
Expensive, and everyone who does it says the same thing afterwards. Book it for your first morning, not your last — if the weather cancels, you have another chance.
Walking safari
Only permitted on private land. Completely different pace — you notice tracks, birds and dung rather than looking for big animals.
A photographic hide
Sunken hides at waterholes put you at eye level. Slow, occasionally dull, and responsible for the best photograph most guests take.
Time with a Maasai family
Done badly this is a staged performance and a hard sell. Done well it is a genuine afternoon. We only use community-run visits, and we will say which.
A night drive
Not allowed in national parks. Different animals entirely — genets, civets, aardvark if you are lucky, and cats that hunt after dark.
Sundowners
A drink on a rock as the light goes. Costs nothing, and it is what people remember.
Flying between camps costs more and saves a day. Usually worth it.
